What Is a VPN and Do You Actually Need One?

A VPN encrypts your internet traffic and masks your IP from websites and your ISP. Learn how VPNs work, what they protect against, and when they are useless.

What a VPN Actually Does

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server operated by the VPN provider. All your internet traffic flows through this tunnel, which does two main things:

  1. Encrypts your traffic so that anyone monitoring your network connection — your ISP, a coffee shop Wi-Fi operator, or a hacker on the same network — cannot read what you're sending and receiving.
  2. Masks your IP address by replacing it with the IP address of the VPN server. Websites and services you visit see the VPN's IP, not yours.

That's it. This is genuinely useful in some scenarios and irrelevant in others.

When a VPN Is Genuinely Useful

On Public Wi-Fi Networks

When you connect to an open Wi-Fi network in an airport, hotel, or coffee shop, anyone else on that network could potentially intercept unencrypted traffic. A VPN encrypts everything, making interception useless. This is the strongest real-world use case for a personal VPN.

Protecting Your Traffic from Your ISP

Without a VPN, your Internet Service Provider can see every website you visit and potentially sell that data (in countries where this is legal). A VPN prevents your ISP from seeing your traffic — though it doesn't stop them from seeing that you're connected to a VPN.

Bypassing Geographic Restrictions

If you want to access content that's restricted in your country — like a streaming library available only in another region — a VPN can route your traffic through a server in that country. This is a legal gray area in some jurisdictions.

Hiding Your Location from Websites

Websites can use your IP address to determine your approximate location. A VPN hides your real IP, giving you a degree of location privacy.

When a VPN Does NOT Help You

This is where most VPN advertising is misleading. A VPN does not:

  • Make you anonymous. Websites can still identify you through cookies, browser fingerprinting, and login accounts. If you're logged into Google, Google still knows who you are — regardless of your VPN.
  • Protect you from malware or phishing. A VPN doesn't scan websites for threats or block malicious downloads. It's not an antivirus.
  • Secure your accounts. If you use weak passwords or no 2FA, a VPN doesn't help. Your login credentials are still at risk.
  • Hide everything from the VPN provider. You're shifting trust from your ISP to your VPN provider. The VPN provider can see your traffic. Choosing a trustworthy provider with a verified no-logs policy matters.
  • Prevent tracking by social media platforms. If you're logged into Facebook, it tracks you no matter what.

What to Look for in a VPN Provider

If you decide to use a VPN, not all providers are equal. Look for:

No-Logs Policy (Independently Audited)

A reputable VPN should not store records of which websites you visited. The best providers have this audited by independent third parties — don't just take their word for it.

Strong Encryption Protocols

Look for VPNs that support WireGuard or OpenVPN — modern, secure protocols. Avoid VPNs that use outdated protocols like PPTP.

Kill Switch

If your VPN connection drops, a kill switch cuts off your internet connection entirely rather than letting traffic flow unprotected. This is an important feature.

Reputable Providers

  • Mullvad — strong privacy focus, accepts anonymous payment, independently audited
  • ProtonVPN — run by the same team as ProtonMail, strong privacy record
  • ExpressVPN, NordVPN — popular, feature-rich, though more marketing-heavy

Avoid Free VPNs

Free VPN services almost always have a catch. Many log and sell your browsing data to third parties — which is exactly the opposite of what a privacy tool should do. Some have even been found containing malware. If you want privacy, pay for a reputable service.

Do You Actually Need a VPN?

Here's an honest answer:

  • If you frequently use public Wi-Fi — yes, a VPN is a worthwhile investment.
  • If you're worried about ISP tracking — a VPN helps, though a privacy-focused browser and DNS resolver also address this.
  • If you want complete anonymity online — a VPN alone won't get you there. Tor Browser is better suited for that purpose.
  • If your main security concerns are phishing, malware, or account compromise — a VPN doesn't address those. Focus on strong passwords, 2FA, and safe browsing instead.

A VPN is one tool in a security toolkit, not a magic solution. Understanding what it does — and doesn't do — helps you decide whether the cost is worth it for your specific situation.
