Instagram & Facebook Account Takeover Attacks

Attackers hijack Instagram and Facebook accounts via credential stuffing and fake support messages, then use them for fraud, extortion, and further phishing.

How Accounts Get Stolen

Account takeovers happen through multiple vectors:

  • Password reuse from data breaches
  • Fake "Instagram Support" DMs with phishing links
  • SIM swapping attacks to intercept SMS 2FA
  • Malicious third-party apps with excessive permissions

    • How to Protect Yourself

    • Enable two-factor authentication using an authenticator app (not SMS)
    • Use a unique, strong password for each social media account
    • Never click links claiming to be from "platform support" in DMs
    • Review connected apps and revoke unnecessary permissions
    • Set up login alerts

    What to Do If Affected

    1. 1.Use the platform's official account recovery process immediately
    2. 2.Check for and revoke any unfamiliar connected apps
    3. 3.Alert your followers that your account was compromised
    4. 4.Change passwords on all accounts that use the same email/password
    5. 5.Contact platform support through official channels
